Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 200 tapestries which date from between 1301 and 2000.

This internationally important collection predominantly comprises tapestries from France and the Spanish Netherlands, with other regions represented including England, Germany and Switzerland. The size of individual tapestries varies from small fragments to very large wall-coverings. The earliest tapestry, dating from the early 14th century, is German while the latest 18th century pieces are of Dutch origin. Almost all of the other tapestries in the collection were made between the late 15th and mid-16th century, with just a few from the 17th century and a small amount of contemporary British pieces.

Almost all of the tapestries in this collection were all acquired by Sir William Burrell with the exception of four tapestries purchased by the Trustees of his purchase fund.
