Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 5,000 items related to the civic history of Glasgow. These date from 1600 to the present.

This collection contains a wide range of materials related to the governing of Glasgow and its development from burgh to municipal power and local authority status, including the incorporation of surrounding villages and burghs such as Pollokshaws, Govan and Partick. It represents projects and events initiated and supported by civic concerns, such as the City Improvement Trust and the Great Exhibitions including the Glasgow International Exhibitions of 1888 and 1901, the Scottish National Exhibition of 1911, the Empire Exhibition of 1938 and the Glasgow Garden Festival of 1988.

The collection includes unique and unusual items that have more than a local significance given Glasgow’s importance in Scotland today, its former status as Second City of the Empire and its history as a major economic centre from the 18th century onwards.
