YOU ARE IN: Human History; Coins and Medals Sporting Awards

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 400 sporting awards, which date from 1805 to 2005.

This collection comprises medals and associated trophies and shields from Scotland and Britain, and especially from Glasgow. It represents a wide range of competitive sports played at professional, amateur and school levels by individuals and clubs. The awards relate to athletics, swimming, football, boxing, bowling, tennis, cycling, curling, angling, golf, sailing, rowing, hockey, shooting, quoiting and speedway. There are examples of medals from the Glasgow Special Olympics of 2005 and Glasgow’s International Exhibitions of 1888 and 1901. The largest group of medals are shooting medals from the 19th and early 20th century. Significant items include the trophies and shields won by and presented to Sir Thomas Lipton for sailing, and early football medals for both amateurs and professionals.

The significance of this collection lies in its relationship with wider contextual issues, such as sport as a social and economic activity and the types of individuals connected with different sports and the associated awards.
