Using the Navigator Glasgow Museums’ Collections are defined by four very large and distinct categories which cover the entire collection. These are Art, Human History, Natural History and Transport and Technology.
Within each of these categories is a hierarchy of collections. These start from the general concepts above and move down, through several ’levels’, to specific themes. Each movement down the hierarchy makes the collection smaller and more specific.
When searching and using keywords most users have specific objects in mind - a particular painting, artefact or artist. However the Navigator is based upon 'groups' of objects which are arranged into subjects that have been defined by our curators. All of these subjects are represented by selected objects from that collection area. Currently a very small number of objects are represented on the Navigator - around 3,000 out of over 1 million! This number will increase with time however by arranging the Navigator into collection areas users can find the subject they are interested in and contact us for further information of they do not find the specific object they were looking for. If this object is on display we will tell you were you can see it and if it is in storage we can make arrangements for you to come and see it.
