Description

Gilt-framed oil portrait of the Glasgow muslin manufacturer William Strang by Scottish artist John Inglis McClymont in 1902. William Strang set up his business in 1876, becoming William Strang & Sons when joined by his sons William, James, Robert W., and John N. They had their premises at King's Park and Newhall Factories, Greenhead Street, Glasgow. By 1914 they had 700 looms and employed 700 staff, specialising in fancy muslins for draperies and dress goods. William Strang invented and patented the first power loom to weave ‘Leno Harness’, now known as ‘Madras’ muslin.
