New conservation centre preserves the fabric of the nation

Preserving the fabric of the nation’s treasures for future generations, a new textile conservation centre is to be established at the University of Glasgow.
The Textile Conservation Centre Foundation (TCCF) and the University of Glasgow have agreed to found the new teaching and research facility – the only resource of its kind in the UK – in the University’s Robertson Building.

Glasgow Museums join forces with the BBC and the British Museum in 'A History of the World' Project

The BBC and the British Museum have joined forces in an original and unprecedented public service partnership, focusing on world history. At its heart is a landmark series on BBC Radio 4, ‘A History of the World in 100 Objects.
This series is a narrative global history told through the British Museum’s unparalleled world collection. The series will tap in to the unique power of objects to tell stories and make connections across the globe. To produce the series the BBC and the British Museum have come together in an ambitious partnership to ensure the widest possible access and engagement across radio, television and online.
Glasgow Museums were asked to come up with 10 objects for the project in partnership with other local museums. The objects selected are:
- Marianne Grant’s Trunk (Glasgow Museums - Kelvingrove)
- Avant Armour (Glasgow Museums - Kelvingrove)
- Burmese silk coat (Glasgow Museums – Glasgow Museums Resource Centre)
- Turtle Posts (Glasgow Museums - Kelvingrove)
- Ghost Dance Shirt (Glasgow Museums - Kelvingrove)
- South African Locomotive 3007 (Glasgow Museums – Glasgow Museums Resource Centre)
- Billy Connolly’s Banana Boots (Glasgow Museums – People’s Palace)
- Louhan (Glasgow Museums - Burrell Collection)
- Pig Iron Bar (Summerlee Heritage Park, Coatbridge)
- Paisley Shawl (Paisley Museum & Art Galleries)

Glasgow’s Museum Treasure Trove reopens and goes Online

Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) reopens on 25 September 2009 after a major expansion.This makes the bulk of Glasgow’s internationally renowned museums collection available once again for the public to enjoy.
Around a million objects are now stored at GMRC in Nitshill. Included are thousands of artistic masterpieces, one of Europe’s largest arms and armour repositories, and treasures from Ancient Greece and Egypt. read more... (link opens in new window)
The Burrell Collection Tapestries Project
The aim of this three-year project is to prepare a scholarly catalogue of over 200 tapestries in the Burrell Collection.
This is one of the largest and most important tapestry collections in the world. It consists of a coherent and comprehensive series of tapestries. They range from modest cushion covers to rich wall-hangings. Most of them were made in the late medieval period – between 1400 and 1600. read more... (link opens in new window)
