Afro-Portuguese dagger from Sherbro Island, Sierra Leone, 1974

Afro-Portuguese dagger with Italian double-edged blade of cinquedea type with broad hilt and tapering to a narrow point. The hilt consist of two ivory plates secured to a metal tang with brass rivets.

The carved ivory Janus-headed pommel belongs to Sherbro-Portuguese group of African ivories, with faces resembling those of Nomoli figures from Sierra Leone.

Bulom and Sherbro craftsmen of Sherbro Island , Sierra Leone, produced salt cellars, spoons, forks, dagger handles and hunting horns for the Portuguese during the 16th and 17th centuries
