Vase by Doulton & Co Ltd
The salt-glazed Doulton & Co. vase was made at the 1888 Glasgow International Exhibition and decorated as Queen Victoria watched during her private visit on 24 August. The Queen stopped to observe the potters at Doulton's Indian Pavillion 'process stand' as Sir Henry Doulton himself explained the techniques demonstrated.
The event is recorded on the case of the vase with the wording 'THIS VASE DECORATED BEFORE HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN GLASGOW AUGUST 24 88.' The initials of the women workers are there too – EC for Edith M. Coleman, senior assistant, EW for Emily M.R. Welch, senior assistant 1879–88, and IEG, whose name has not been traced.
