Marriage chair

Oak marriage chair, Scottish, 1667

Oak marriage chair, Scottish, 1667

An oak marriage chair carved with WC & IF 1667. As is typical of the Provand's Lordship's furniture collection this derives from Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City.

The chair celebrated the marriage of William Chalmers and Isabella Forbes. Chalmers studied divinity at King's College in 1617 and from 1647 to 1649 he was a member of the Commission of Assemblies. He married in 1667 and died in 1671 having had four sons with Isabella Forbes.

It was donated to Provand's Lordship Society by Sir William Burrell, in March 1927.
