Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus)

Ptarmigan mounted in glass case

Ptarmigan mounted in glass case

This ptarmigan is in autumn plumage, part way between its summer colouration of white underparts and wings, with brown, grey and black back and its nearly all white winter plumage, which provides camouflage in the snowy uplands where it lives.

The bird is part of what is known as the Major Christie collection, which came from Ross Priory, on the banks of Loch Lomond. However, Major Christie had not put together the collection himself, but had simply acquired it when he bought the house in 1949. The collection was actually put together by Sir George Hector Leith-Buchanan (18331903).
