This is a family group of gannets mounted as a diorama display by Charles Kirk (18721922).

Kirk was trained as a taxidermist by Rowland Wards in London, before establishing his own business in Glasgow in 1896. As well as an excellent taxidermist, he was also a very good early bird photographer and used his photographs (mainly taken on Ailsa Craig) as reference material when mounting the birds.

It is likely that the gannets for the diorama came from Ailsa Craig, where today there is a breeding colony of about 36,000 pairs.
