Wool, silk, gold and silver tapestry, St Anne, the Virgin and Christ with four female Saints, Germany, late 15th century

Wool, silk, gold and silver tapestry, St Anne, the Virgin and Christ with four female Saints, Germany, late 15th century

Tapestry, possibly an altar frontal or antependium woven with wool, silk and metal wefts and linen warps depicting St Anne with the Virgin and Child, and Four Saints. St Anne in a blue mantle and fur-trimmed green gown stands with Jesus Christ as a Child on her arm, holding a young crowned Virgin Mary in the other hand. On the left is St Dorothea carrying a book and holding a child with a basket of flowers, St Barbara with a book and tower. On the right St Catherine with a wheel and sword, and St Agnes with a lamp and flowering branch. Dark blue background with flowering vines.

This tapestry is thought to have come from the Convent of Marienburg, near Boppard am Rhein in what is now Germany. Its later owners include by Baron Riedesel, Herzog Luitpold and Sir Hercules Read, before it was purchased by Sir William Burrell on 14 November 1928.
