Sea slug (Dendronotus frondosus)
The sea slug (Dendronotus frondosus) is a very widespread and variable species, it can be found all around the British Isles, across the Atlantic and up into the Arctic circle as well as extending into the Pacific Ocean. It is thought that there may be several species currently identified under this one name but further investigation is required.
These sea slugs come in a wide range of colours but they all have large branched gills and rhinophores all over their backs. They are found in shallow waters where they feed on a variety of hydroids.
These specimens were collected from the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth, they were preserved in spirit and mounted on a blue glass background.
