Oil lamp with handle, made of pale clay; moulded with a central grotesque face of a slave and decorated with scroll ornamentation.
This lamp is from Robert Hamilton Lang’s significant donation of more than 300 items. Lang was a Scottish banker stationed in Cyprus from 1861 and 1872, where he managed the Imperial Ottoman Bank in Larnaca and acted as Vice-Consul. He accumulated a large private collection of ancient pottery, glass, coins and other antiquities which he excavated himself or brought from local farmers. His artefacts, and accounts of his discoveries, now provide a valuable source of information on antiquarian endeavours in the 1800s.
