Squilla mantis is a type of mantis shrimp or stomatopod. This specimen was collected off the Devonshire coast in 1885 but today they are more commonly found in the Mediterranean.
Mantis shrimp have large claws at the front that they use to capture prey, S. mantis has sharp pointed claws but other mantis shrimp have hammer like claws to smash their prey. Mantis shrimp also have some of the most advanced and complicated eyes in the animal kingdom, this is thought to help with their prey capture and with communication with other mantis shrimps.
