R Cochran set up Britannia Pottery (B. P Co. Ltd) in Glasgow in 1856 with his son, Alexander, taking over after his death in 1869. In 1896 J Arnold Fleming joined him as a partner and the company was known as Cochran and Fleming. The Britannia mark had been used from the beginning of the business and in 1920 the firm became known as Britannia Pottery. It continued to trade until this name until 1935. The company manufactured white earthenware with either a transfer or hand painted design. Marks are many and varied. They include the initials of the partners, the initials of the company, 'HIAWATHA', 'Scotch Ivory', as well as the range names.
