Description

Brodie was born in Banff. He moved to Aberdeen when still young and first worked there as a plumber. Self-taught as a portrait sculptor and medallion worker, he moved to Edinburgh in 1847 to study at the Trustees' School of Design. In 1853 he went to Rome and studied under Lawrence Macdonald. He was a sculptor mainly of statues and portrait busts. His sitters included Lords Cockburn and Jeffrey, Queen Victoria and David Livingstone. He ran a large practice in Edinburgh. Brodie exhibited in the Royal Academy of Arts, London from 1850, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh from 1847 and Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts from 1867. Elected ARSA 1852, RSA 1859.
