Description

Paul Eugène Cremetti is part of the provenance/ownership history of Sir William Burrell's collection for the work entitled 'Bon Confreres' by Daumier. He was the second of five sons of the eminent and distinguished art dealer and fine art expert, Eugène Cremetti, who was instrumental in introducing the Barbizon School to the English public.
He was the only son who entered the art dealing profession, and in the 1911 census he is recorded as an 'art dealer's clerk'. On his father's retirement in 1923, Paul took over the business, in his own name.
According to entries on the Ancestry website, in the 1930s he travelled to the USA on a number of occasions, giving his permanent country of residence as Switzerland and noting his profession as 'art dealer' or 'retired'. In January 1941 his name appears in the US Social Security Applications and Claims Index, followed in 1942 with an entry on a US WWII Draft Registration Card listing his residence as Saranac Lake, NY. He became a naturalised US citizen on 17 June 1950.
