John Byrne was born in Paisley and studied at Glasgow School of Art. He achieved notoriety when, in London in 1967, he exhibited a body of work that he inscribed with the signature 'Patrick' (his father's first name) in an attempt to remain anonymous. As well as being an artist he is also a successful writer, designer and film director. As a printmaker he has practised in a variety of different media including monotype, etching and lithography. Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s Byrne concentrated on writing and directing for theatre and film but he returned to art in his later years. He was involved in the literary and art scenes in Scotland. He died in November 2023.
