Description

Painting entitled 'Hawking', by Philips Wouwerman. Painted in Haarlem, this is an excellent example of a landscape by one of the many Dutch 'Little Masters'. Small in size, it would have been suitable for display in an average middle class town house. The broad sky with windy effect is typical of low-lying Holland, and the sandy dune landscape is reminiscent of the area around Haarlem. The sport of hunting was confined to the better off classes. Therefore artists such as Wouwerman who portrayed scenes such as this had a ready and lucrative market for their work.
