Description

Painting entitled 'Flowers in a terracotta vase', by Rachel Ruysch, 1723. The crisply painted blooms show the mastery over her art that made Rachel Ruysch the most sought after flower painter of her time. It did not matter that the curving, swirling patterns made by some of them would probably have been impossible in a real arrangement in a vase. Artists often chose flowers that were not all in bloom at the same season. It was the arrangement on the canvas that counted. A slight fading of colours may be seen in the roses. The slightly yellow varnish also obscures some of the picture's true original beauty.
