Description

In this imaginary Italian landscape, the figure of Flora, goddess of flowers, is being drawn in procession in her chariot by winged youths. The scene is bathed in cool, clear morning light, and there is a sense of balance and harmony, hallmarks of the Neo-Classical style in art.

Many artists were drawn to Rome in the 18th century by the lively artistic environment and the inspiring remains of her ancient civilisation.

Edinburgh-born More lived there between 1771 and 1793 and earned a fine reputation, selling his much admired landscapes to visiting British aristocrats.
