-
This stela was excavated at Deir el-Medina, the village of the workmen who built the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Penbuy was a guardian there and is well known from his tomb (TT10). He is accompanied in the lower register by a child, his mother, wife, son and two women of his household. He kneels before an offering table and the pregnant hippopotamus goddess Taweret, appearing here as a beautiful seated woman. The hieroglyphs record Penbuy's hymn to Taweret 'whose wrath is more oppressive than a mountain of quartzite'. He begs her forgiveness for something evil he has done.
