Description

Woman’s dress, consisting of bodice (E.1947.108.a.1) and matching skirt (E.1947.108.a.2), in black silk woven with tiny pink three-petal motifs. Bodice with standing collar in cream silk overlaid with ruched cream machine lace fastening centre back with three metal hooks and eyes. Centre front inset panel from collar to waist in loosely-gathered cream silk overlaid cream machine lace, fastening on right with two metal hooks and eyes, applied cream machine lace either side extending from shoulder to waist. Fastening centre front with fifteen black silk buttons and one metal hook and eye at hem. Full-length sleeves pleated into shoulder, full upper sleeve narrowing to fitted dagged cuff, decorated with band of cream machine lace. Slight v-shaped waistline with horizontally pleated black silk satin, fastening on right with one metal hook and eye. Lined in black silk, black waist tape woven ‘NEILSON, SHAW & MACGREGOR / GLASGOW’. Skirt, full-length, gored panels attached to waistband flat at front with fullness pleated into centre back with slight train, double frill around hem. Lined in black silk.
