Description

Banner 'November - Remembrance', the eleventh of twelve Keeping Glasgow In Stitches banners (E.1991.65.1-12). Predominantly in dark pink, purple and grey and black with a vessel at the top and the figure ‘9’. The main panel has an abstract design with decreasing white and grey circles the outer one numbers from 1900 at the bottom, through 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 to 1990 at the top with a vertical band on the right numbering the circles from 1200 to 1900. A white net diagonal stripe includes images of lost landmarks, including shops, the Palais, a tram, and a ballroom poster.

This banner from the ‘Keeping Glasgow in Stitches’ exhibition was made in celebration of Glasgow’s year as European City of Culture in 1990. It is one of 12 that were made for each month of the year by members of the public in the Central Hall of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

It is the eleventh in the series, representing the month of November. The outline design for the banners was created by Malcolm Lochhead and more detailed design allocated to individual designers, however, this particular banner was completely designed by Malcolm Lochhead. The theme is ‘Remembrance’ and the abstract design symbolizes all that Glasgow has lost. Local landmarks vanish in the mists of time blown away by the wind of change of this century. A single red poppy commemorates the people Glasgow has lost - by death, disease or disaffection. And beneath the fireworks and the celebration the question why have we have lost so much?

All of the banners were produced by the Glasgow-based community sewing business ‘NeedleWorks’ and sponsored by a local business, in this case the thread manufacturer Coats Leisure Crafts Group.
