Description

This tunic-style evening dress dating from around 1923–25 came from Murielle’s, an up-market boutique run by Mrs Muriel Hymans. It is made from gold and silver lamé and decorated with gold thread embroidery and glass beads. During the period it was made it would have been the height of fashion and this is supported by an article which appeared in the lifestyle magazine Scottish Field in June 1926 that stated 'one cannot get away from lamé, gold or silver, shot or plain…. and many of the lamé things are sewn with jewels'.

Murielle’s opened in 1910 with premises at 432 Sauchiehall Street and closed when Muriel retired in 1973. Dresses from the shop’s archive, including this example, were donated to Glasgow Museums later that same year.
