Basket-hilted sword, the knucklebow of the pierced basket hilt marked 'IS', the initials of the maker John Simpson the elder (admitted a freeman of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow, 22 August 1683). The imported German blade is inscribed 'GOTT BEWAHR DIE AUFRECHTE SCHOTTEN' ('God protect the upright Scots') circa 1720.
