- Description
-
Circular oak card table designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Miss Cranston's Argyle Street Tearooms. Its circular top sits above a square body with four vertical, tapering legs. Four panels between the legs are each carved in relief with pierced decoration of an almost circular form alluding to plant forms or germinating seeds.
Worn from years of heavy use, it testifies to the robustness of Mackintosh's early tearoom furniture. Its solidity is lifted by the deep curves of the panels and the tapering legs. It probably transferred premises after Miss Cranston's Argyle Street Tearooms closed in 1918, and was removed from her Ingram Street Tearooms.
