Crane was a painter, illustrator, and man of letters. His work was mainly decorative, as a draughtsman in black and white he executed an extensive range of illustrations, many of which illuminated his own text. He was Director of Design at Manchester between 1893–96, Principal of Royal College of Art, South Kensington, 1898–99, a member of the RWS and of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Cavalier of the Royal Crown of Italy, 1910.
