Description

Glasgow Subway car number 39T. When the Glasgow Subway was opened in 1896 all the trains were made up of just one carriage. The subway, just the third in the world, became very popular and by 1898, more carriages were needed. Carriages like this were purchased and we attached to the ‘Grip’ carriages, which were attached to the steel cable that pulled the trains between stations. This carriage was subsequently extended, modernised and used until the Subway shut for modernisation in 1977.

It was then restored to its original 1898 condition by Glasgow Museum staff.
