Description

Tabulipora urii is a fossil bryozoan with a branching twig-like structure. It occurs in the Lower Limestone Formation of the early Carboniferous. The specimen was collected by John Young at Newfield, near High Blantyre. The rocks of this old quarry were rich in fossils and were particularly well known for excellent bryozoans.

The species is named in honour of David Ure an assistant minister in East Kilbride who was also a pioneer in the study of Scottish palaeontology. In his book ‘The history of Rutherglen and East Kilbride’ published in1793 he accurately described and illustrated many of the fossils, including this bryozoan, which he found in the rocks from the local area.
