Description

Post box, made by Cochrane & Company. Believed to be the oldest post box in Scotland, formerly in St Enoch Square. 251 No 2. Red painted pillar box style with black painted base. Embossed in black base: ‘COCHRANE & CO. / WOODSIDE WORKS / DUDLEY 1863’. Small letter space, door with lock and domed top. It is one of the first National Standard box design (introduced in 1859). It is one of only 6 of this particular type (PB1004A ) known to survive. The letter box remains in active use at the Riverside Museum.
