A slightly rounded fragment of dark purplish-grey slate showing foliation. The upper surface has a smooth texture and faint glossy sheen. Slate is a fine grained rock that is generally derived from the metamorphism of shale. It is characterised by being able to split into thin, flat layers known as 'slaty cleavage'.
