Description

Lanarkite is a rare lead sulphate mineral. The locality at which this specimen was collected is unknown but it is probably from the Leadhills and Wanlockhead lead mining area. The lanarkite is present as sprays of small, elongate crystals of a light green colour. It is surrounded by brighter blue green caledonite another Leadhills speciality.

The old mines of Leadhills and the neighbouring village of Wanlockhead are well known for the many different mineral species that have been found in the veins. These include rare minerals like the lanarkite and caledonite in this specimen as well as others such as leadhillite and susannite all of which were first discovered here.

Lanarkite was named in 1832 after the county of Lanark in which Leadhills is situated.
