Enrolled as a pupil under the brothers Foulis in the Academy of Arts in the old College building, High Street, Glasgow; visited Rome, 1764. Obtained the gold medal given by the Academy of St Luke. Painted peasant life and character, Allan latterly devoted himself to the delineation of Scottish manners and customs. he was a friend of Robert Burns and illustrator of the poet's themes. For 10 years he was Master of the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh.
