Description

The Anderson Special Mark II car is the second of a series of four 'Specials' designed and built by James Anderson during the 1920s and 1930s. The cars all took part in road and hill-climb races.

The appearance of the Mark II is not unusual to us now but it seemed very different in the 1920s. This remarkable car was only one of four designed and built by James Anderson, who had followed his father into the family garage business at Newton Mearns, just outside Glasgow. He was a modest man with astounding creativity and inventiveness. He also devised and patented innovative machine tools, including the revolutionary Vertimax vertical lathe, some of which were adopted by major manufacturers.

Photography and film-making was another of James Anderson's passions and he filmed himself driving this car (film is available from National Library of Scotland, Moving Image Archive).
