Margaret Gilmour, along with her sister Mary, attended The Glasgow School of Art, and became associated with a group of female designers and artists known as The Glasgow Girls, the group included Frances MacDonald and her sister Margaret MacDonald, wife of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. One of the features of the output of women artists from the GSA was the setting up of Sister Studios in the city. Margaret and Mary established a studio in 1893 at 179 West George Street which they maintained for about fifty years. The Gilmour Studio taught many craft students and sold a wide variety of arts and crafts including; metalwork, leatherwork, embroidery, ceramic decoration, and painting.
