Black-and-white etching showing a goat standing amongst dark trees and bushes. The animal appears to be standing along a path. The etching is composed of many scratches and squiggles: deeper scrawls for darker areas such as the thicker foliage, and lighter scratches for areas such as the clouds and trees in the distance, as well as for patches of light on the path.
Matthijs is the best known of the three Maris brothers: Matthijs, Willem and Jacob. They were all part of The Hague School, a group of artists who took their name from the Dutch city in which many of them were based. Many of Matthijs’ paintings were dark and monochromatic: etching allowed the artist to follow this style in a different medium.
