Description

One of Monticelli’s friends described how ‘the lyrical and magical fantasies of Monticelli were really inspired by things he saw and direct observation... Monticelli was a purely instinctive artist; he let himself be governed by his temperament...’.

William Burrell very much admired the paintings of Monticelli. He was one of the first artists that Burrell bought, lending a Monticelli to the International exhibition in Glasgow in 1901. There are 14 works in the collection today.

This is quite a late purchase – Burrell bought this from the Glasgow dealer Ian McNicol in 1948 for £308.
