Description

Stuart Cranston, older brother of Miss Catherine Cranston, was an enterprising Glasgow tea dealer and is generally credited with having been the person who established the idea of tea rooms. This cigarette case is embossed with details of Cranston's rapidly expanding business. It was probably sold as merchandise to patrons of his establishments. The back of the case fittingly states that Cranston's tea rooms had smoking rooms at Buchanan Street, Renfield Street, Sauchiehall Street and Queen Street . The front of the case promotes his Fruitarian lunch room at Buchanan Street. Fruitarianism is a stricter variant of Vegetarianism with a diet consisting mainly of raw foods: fruit, grains and nuts.
