Description

Man’s waistcoat decorated with Cree-Saulteaux style beadwork, of commercially tanned deer hide. The colours of the beads were chosen by the Metis artists Jennine Krauchi and Jenny Meyer to reflect “modern” colours used in contemporary clothing. Machine stitched. Lined at upper rear panel with navy printed cotton cloth of a pattern similar to that used in older garments of this type, and at lower part with grey cloth lining. Edges and armholes trimmed with thinner deer hide cut with pinking shears. The chest panels are decorated with floral and leaf beadwork, using size 12 glass beads, stitched directly onto panels using a paper pattern as a guide. The flowers are executed using sky and royal blue beads, with a yellow and orange centre. The leaves are executed using two shades of green and are connected with a white beaded stem. There are two patch pockets on the lower half, each decorated with a hide trim, hide fringes, and floral beadwork in the same colour scheme. Four buttons made of slices of deer antler are stitched down the front of the waistcoat. The reverse of the waistcoat has beaded floral decoration in the same colour scheme across the shoulder panel, and hide fringes suspended from this panel. The beadwork on the reverse was done by Jenny Meyer, that on the front was done by Jennine Krauchi, who also assembled the waistcoat. Made 2004-2005.
