Description

Dr Tom J. Honeyman was Glasgow's first Director of Museums and Art Galleries in 1939–54, famously purchasing Salvador Dali's painting Christ of St John on the Cross in 1952 and taking a leading role in the early negotiations to secure the Burrell Collection for the city. He was also a founder and first chairman of the Citizens' Theatre. Honeyman was elected and served as Rector of the University of Glasgow from 1953 until 1956.
