Poster advertising Anchor Line services from Glasgow to New York "New York from Glasgow by the Anchor Line" c1920. The full colour design shows a view of shipping on the Hudson with skyscrapers (including the tower of the Singer Building) in the foreground.
Anchor Line ships sailed on routes from Glasgow for over 100 years. Services to India began in 1855, to the USA in 1856 and to Canada in 1859 with many thousands of passengers and tons of cargo being carried to and from the Clyde each year.
This poster is one of a collection gifted to Glasgow Museums by the Anchor Line. The posters are proof copies which record the numbers printed for circulation to Anchor Line booking offices and shipping agents. They usually feature a blank area for overprinting with particular agent's addresses.
