This is one of three different menus Jessie Marion King designed for Miss Cranston's Lunch and Tea Rooms in Glasgow, and one of two in our collection. The outside of the menu card features King’s design printed black and white, whilst the inside has been left blank for a type written menu with a basic price list. The front cover of King’s design follows a framed layout typical of her figurative illustrations – in the centre is a pastoral scene of a lady shepherdess, with three lambs grazing on daisies at her feet and behind them small shrubs in blossom which in turn form the side borders of the design. The design is framed at the top by a shaded band of flying ducks. The bottom of the design is framed by a box listing all of Miss Cranston's tearooms - Argyle Street, Buchanan Street, Ingram Street and Sauchiehall Street - indicating that the menu cards were used across all of her businesses. The back of the menu card provides us with some valuable historic information: a note to visitors advertising smoking and rest rooms and all the facilities and modern conveniences her tearooms provided - telephones, writing desks, newspapers, telegrams, billiards, chess and draughts.
