- Description
-
The specimen is an example of a microfungi collected and named by Elias Frias making it an important reference specimen in fungal classification. Elias Fries (1794-1878), often referred to as the ‘father of mycology’, was born in Småland (southern Sweden). In 1819 he published his first fascicle of the exsiccata ‘Scleromyceti Sueciae’.
This important collection was transferred to the museum from the Glasgow University Botany Department in 2005. It contains 263 specimens held in seven fascicles (bundles); fascicle No 7 (comprising Decads 23 to 26) is missing. The fascicles are unbound, and although incomplete, it is considered be a very rare, and one of the best preserved, first edition sets in existence. It is housed in a specially built wooden cabinet with eight shelves and glazed doors. - ID Number
