- Description
-
The Alpine Butterwort (Pinguicula alpina), a small insectivorous plant, has only ever been recorded from a single site in the British Isles, in Easter Ross. It was first recorded in 1831 by the Reverend George Gordon, a minister in the parish of Birnie in Moray. The specimen, part of the Glasgow University’s collection, is annotated as being collected by the “the original discoverer”.
It has not been recorded at the site since before 1919 and its decline is thought to be due to habitat loss and over collecting. It is found in mainland Europe, and its sole record in Britain is viewed with the suspicion that it may have been originally planted here. - ID Number
