Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 250 objects related to Buddhism. These date broadly from 1000 to 2000. This collection comprises items relating to the different ritual and social practices of Buddhism across different countries and cultures. The majority of the objects come from Burma, with others originating from Thailand, Tibet, Sri Lanka, Japan, China and Scotland. The collection includes a significant 12th century Guan Yin and important 16th and 17th century statues of Buddha. Representations of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas dominate the collection, but it also includes a wide variety of other artefacts such as prayer flags, thangkas and musical instruments. Additional material associated with the collection includes photographs and oral histories from the Buddhist community in Glasgow.
