Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 415 Islamic coins, which date broadly from 1000 to 1900. This collection comprises bronze, copper, silver, tin and gold coins, and glass weights, coined jewellery and bridal headdresses. The objects come from a wide geographical area, which encompasses the land of contemporary Turkey, India, Egypt, Morocco, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Somaliland, Sudan, Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia, Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, Syria, Zanzibar and North Africa. The collection includes early Abbasid silver coins, which are particularly important as there are comparatively few of them outside the Middle East, and significant Palestinian and Syrian jewellery and coined headdresses.
