Sikhism

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 34 objects related to Sikhism. These date broadly from 1700 to 2000. This collection comprises objects from India and Scotland. These represent four of the five ‘K’s of Sikhism, or symbols of faith – Khanga, Karra, Kachha and Kirpan, or comb, bracelet, undergarment and sword. It also includes a bowl, coins and a modern painting of Guru Nanak. In addition, there is a textile banner made by the Sikh community in Scotland to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Khalsa, and a plastic model of the Golden Temple Amritsar that continues to be used by the Sikh community in annual ceremonies. Additional material associated with the collection includes photographs and oral histories from the Sikh community in Glasgow. The overall significance of this collection rests in its connection with the social and religious history of Glasgow, and in the interpretative treatment of objects that is possible within the context of a museum of religion.
