Glasgow Women's History

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 500 objects associated with women’s history in Glasgow. These date from the 17th century to the present. This collection relates to the changing roles of women living in Glasgow, with a particular emphasis on women’s political organizations and the fight for equal status and the vote. It comprises banners, newsletters, paintings, sashes, ceramics, postcards, booklets, leaflets, badges and other paraphernalia of women’s groups in the city. The women’s suffrage material is directly linked to Glasgow suffragettes and includes hunger-strike medals, sashes, photographs, postcards, books and journals. Objects connected with the anti-slavery movement include a Glasgow Ladies’ Emancipation Society collection box from around 1850, together with a photograph of the woman who owned it. There is also material from the Co-operative Women’s Guilds and British Women’s Temperance Association, and items relating to women in business and to women’s health and birth control.
